Watching/Tweeting the #Emmy’s

Last night, television’s biggest night took center stage in Hollywood, but also took over more than just one screen in most homes. With one hand on the remote, and the other scrolling through feeds on smartphones and tablets, Canadians watching and tweeting about their favourite shows generated 85 million impressions involving the Emmy’s.

While the social media buzz often revolves around the best and worst dressed (I”ll let Colleen, Jennifer and Meg share their picks) or whether or not Jim Parsons should have taken home another Emmy for his work – whatever people were talking about, they were very active on social media.

The show peaked in mentions during Billy Crystal’s tribute to Robin Williams (#RIPMrsDoubtfire), leading into Bryan Cranston’s win of Best Actor in a Drama Series – clocking in at somewhere around 7,721 mentions/minute. And with Breaking Bad winning most of the sought after hardware, they also walked away winners on social, as both Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul were among the most mentioned celebs of the evening.


Facebook worked with Emmy organizers to build the “Facebook mentions box” so that fans could have just one more way to connect with Hollywood’s elite. While the tablet didn’t make its rounds on television (at least that we saw), we’re expecting to see the behind the scenes content roll out from the tablet today and coming up soon. This was a great example of how social media helps find new cool ways to capture the events fans want to see.



One question we have is, how long before we no longer need the Live TV show? It’s the same dilemma facing cable networks like Emmy broadcaster NBC, who’s still learning how compete in the social/online/Netflix era of television.
